Glass

When first starting out at LUCA, Paulien was absolutely fascinated with what could be done with glass as a material. Along with its sensitivity and fragility, it also had so much power and potential. However, after the first interaction with the material, she soon learned what a stubborn character it had. She had to learn how to work with this interesting medium, and rapidly developed a "love-hate relationship" with it. Three years after that very first meeting with glass, Paulien now finds herself with a lot more patience, great glass partners (especially during glass blowing), a lot more experience in its different techniques, many memorable scars from cuts and burns, and the will power to want to have a great finishing result. All this together, and the outcome is worth the entire effort.

One of Paulien's most favourite novels is Slaughterhouse-Five, written by Kurt Vonnegut. There's a quote from the book, that has always stayed with her: "Have you ever seen bugs trapped in amber? Well here we are, Mr.Pilgrim, trapped in the amber of this moment." She likes to associate this exact quote with the finishing results from her glass pieces. She loves the aspect of getting really close to the glass piece and trying to look inside, whether it's with color or not. The delicacy of seeing the inside of the glass piece almost makes it feel like she's trapped in the moment.
